关于英语的两个问题

all用来修饰由同部分组成的集合体时，all所强调的是构成整体的各个部分，而whole侧重于把事物看成一个整体。试比较： all the city与the whole city all my life与my whole life all the staff与the whole staff 由于all与whole在词义上的这种差别，所以下列可数名词只能跟whole搭配： the whole life/plan/system/scheme/situation/truth/distance 这就是说the whole situation是一个固定搭配。而下列可数名词则常常跟all搭配： all day/week/month/year/spring/winter/way 还有一种说法，all虽可与可数名词单数连用，但all出现在单数可数名词之前显得有些正式，因而它常常被whole所代替，例如： His action was condemned by all the civilized world. ---His action was condemned by the whole civilized world. all和whole在名词短语中的位置是不同的，all必须放在定冠词the或物主代词(his,my)之前，而whole必须放在定冠词或物主代词之后，紧放在所修饰的名词这前： 1. I waited all the week for him to answer. I waited the whole week for him to answer. 2. He has worked hard all his life. He has worked hard his whole life.
